During the 2021-2022 school year, Illinois adopted Canvas as the campus-supported Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas is a cutting-edge LMS that streamlines support and maximizes future resources in online learning.

The selection of Canvas is the culmination of large-scale research that included a multi-semester, cross-campus pilot program as well as surveys and feedback from instructors and students. Canvas provides a user-friendly platform that enhances online learning experiences while improving teaching and learning for instructors and students. This acclaimed digital platform has been identified as state-of-the-art and is used by 11 of 14 institutions in the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

To support a seamless campus-wide transition, the university established the Canvas Advisory Committee and kept close contact with peer institutions who have recently made the same transition. This collaboration has been extremely valuable in formulating the university’s strategy and executing a successful shift to Canvas. The migration concluded in June 2022.

Online learning is constantly evolving, and the university continues to adapt to the changing educational landscape and ensure that students have access to the tools they need to achieve their goals. Canvas will continue to serve as a key resource that will maximize online learning for Illinois students and instructors.
