In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Project announced that it captured the first image of a black hole. A team of Illinois researchers helped interpret the massive amounts of data used to produce the image.
Illinois physics and astronomy professor Charles Gammie headed the theory working group for the large, multi-institutional collaboration. The group used the resources available at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications to pioneer the computer simulation of matter falling into black holes.
Over the next few years, the collaboration plans to improve the data collection and analysis process. Learn more about Illinois’ contribution to the Event Horizon Telescope project.
